BitRiver Announces New 100MW Data Center in Eastern Siberia
BitRiver, Russia’s leading industrial crypto mining firm, is set to construct a new 100MW data center in Eastern Siberia. The project is being undertaken by BitRiver-B, the firm’s subsidiary, with plans to commence operations in the second half of 2024.
Investment and Location
The new center, designated as a “data processing center for energy-intensive computing,” will primarily serve cryptocurrency mining operations. BitRiver-B has allocated over $15.15 million for the construction of the facility, which is located in Buryatia, a mountainous republic bordering Mongolia to the south.
Industry Impact
Sergei Bezdelov, director of the Industrial Mining Association (APM), referred to the new center as the largest in the Republic of Buryatia and the Far Eastern Federal District. Despite BitRiver’s inclusion on the US Treasury’s sanctions list, construction on the center began in 2022, signaling an important investment project for the region and the country.
Green Energy and Expertise
CEO Igor Runets highlighted the profitability of mining Bitcoin in Russia, emphasizing the nation’s green energy balance with a high share of hydroelectric and nuclear power plants. The center is expected to employ approximately 120 specialists and focus on fostering young talent in the industry. Notably, it has attracted the attention of leading hardware vendors in the field of artificial intelligence.
Growth Forecasts and Challenges
The APM forecasts an increasing demand for high-performance and energy-intensive computing in Russia by 2035, with BitRiver-B’s new data center specializing in these areas. However, uncertainties loom over the future of crypto mining in Russia, as regulatory authorities continue to express concerns and propose measures that could impact the industry’s competitiveness.
