Hong Kong’s Entry into Spot Bitcoin and Ether ETF Market
Hong Kong recently entered the spot Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs) market with the introduction of six new ETFs. On their first day of trading, these ETFs collectively recorded a trading volume of HK$87.5 million ($11.2 million).
Comparison with US Market
Despite the promising start, the trading volume of the Hong Kong ETFs falls significantly short of the $4.6 billion achieved by 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States. The new Hong Kong Bitcoin ETFs are managed by China Asset Management, Harvest Global, Bosera, and HashKey.
Investor Interest and Market Response
The launch of Hong Kong Bitcoin ETFs follows the increasing investor interest in virtual asset ETFs since the introduction of VA Futures ETFs in late 2022. While these ETFs attracted $529 million in net inflows, the trading volumes for the new Hong Kong ETFs were relatively low compared to their US counterparts.
