China’s central bank, the People’s Bank of China, has launched a digital yuan service guide specifically designed for foreign visitors. This guide aims to facilitate contactless payments using e-CNY during their stay in China.

Accessing the e-CNY App and Setting Up a Digital Yuan Wallet

The official “e-CNY” app, available for download on both the App Store and Google Play, allows international tourists to register for a China’s central bank digital currency (CBDC) account through authorized local banks.

• Accounts can be linked to visitors’ cards via the app.
• Wallet registration supports phone numbers from over 210 countries and regions.
• Anonymous users can open a wallet without visiting a bank in person or providing personal information.

Top-Up and Payment Options

To use the digital wallet, users must top up their accounts with linked funds. The money can be utilized for online purchases and at local vendors supporting digital yuan payments. Unused funds can be easily transferred back to the linked accounts.

• International users can top up their wallets with RMB or foreign currency banknotes at authorized operator bank counters.
• In Hong Kong SAR, the “Faster Payment System” feature allows fee-free top-ups from Hong Kong banking accounts.
